Emissions
Like all activities with the potential to impact on people and
the environment around them, cement and concrete operations in the
UK are, quite rightly, closely monitored and carefully
regulated.
For the cement industry the main regulator is the Environment
Agency (EA), whose job it is to ensure that all emissions to land,
air and water are avoided or controlled within safe limits. The
process under which the EA controls industry is known as the
Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control Directive (IPPC)
which is being implemented across all EU member states to improve
standards of environmental protection. For example, in
England and Wales, the result is the Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) regulatory
regime.
Other parts of the concrete industry are subject to regulation
by local authorities under Part B of the Pollution Prevention and Control
regulations and many other pieces of legislation.
