Emissions to air
In producing concrete the main emissions to air are associated with the cement-making process. Additional emissions are associated with the transport of materials, fuels and final product (within the industry and to customers), the crushing of rock to form aggregate, the production of steel reinforcement and the energy used to process the other raw materials or to power other manufacturing operations.
Within the industry, companies are constantly striving to improve their production processes in order to limit emissions into the atmosphere as much as possible. For instance, the UK cement industry has cut CO2 emissions from cement manufacture by over 3.7 million tonnes between 1990 and 2005 - a 28% reduction.
This section contains more information on the different emissions to air associated with the manufacture of concrete.
