Water

Performance indicator

Mains water consumption as a proportion of production output

Water graph

Water is undoubtably an important resource. The concrete industry aims to reduce its demand for mains water and already utilises rainwater harvesting and water recycling. Water is an ingredient of concrete and a tonne of fresh concrete contains 60 to 80 litres of water. The use of admixtures can reduce the water content by up to 13 litres per tonne. 90 per cent of ready-mixed concrete already includes water reducing admixtures.

The future of 86.6 litres of mains water usage per tonne of concrete in 2010 is comparable with the 2008 baseline figure. It does, however, show a reduction from the 2009 figure.  This indicates a level of inconsistency in the reported data and work to improve the accuracy of this indicator and include data on the use of controlled water is ongoing, in order to provide more consistent terminology and measuring practices for this indicator.

Further information on the water indicator can be found in the full report.
